Traveling through Israel with Mike Huckabee
By Helen Freedman

When I received the invitation from Shani Hikind at the Ateret Cohanim/ Jerusalem Reclamation Project, to accompany Republican Presidential candidate and former  Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee on a mission to Israel, I agreed immediately. I knew that traveling with Mike would  be a unique  and  extraordinary experience. It was all that and more!!

I arrived at Newark airport late Saturday night, August 15, and waited at the gate to board my El-Al midnight flight to Israel. An unassuming man walked into the area all alone. There was no entourage, no guards, no secretaries, and no press. When I looked again, I realized it was Mike Huckabee. I approached him, introduced myself, and told him I was part of the group with which he would be traveling. He was as gracious as could be, agreed to take some books and materials that I had for him, and posed for a photo with me. From that time on, he greeted me as Helen whenever we met.

He had that same warm quality with everyone in the group, remembering each one's name and greeting each one with a smile. This calm, affable, genuine quality about him continued throughout our three day trip in Israel, despite the constant pressure of the media, surrounding him, pushing their way forward, shouting out questions, and following him everywhere. Continue Reading>>

One that calls for a Response
Each week we take a meaningful quote, tie it to scripture, and leave you with a take-home.

Benjamin Netanyahu said: "I reiterated Israel's commitment to peace and outlined what I believe is the winning formula for peace: a demilitarized Palestinian state that recognizes the Jewish state. They have to say unequivocally 'it's over.' We are going to make a real peace. It'll be a final peace. It will be a peace that will end all claims to further conflict.

"If we're asked to recognize a Palestinian state as the nation state of the Palestinian people, it is absolutely essential that the Palestinian leadership says to the Palestinian people 'you will have to accept Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people.' Recognition is the pivot of peace. The absence of such clear and forthright expressions by the Palestinian leadership of such recognition has been what has been holding peace up and this is what the people of Israel and I think all fair minded people in the world expect."

"Jerusalem is the sovereign capital of Israel. We accept no limitations on our sovereignty....Jerusalem is not a settlement ....Jerusalem is the united capital of the Jewish people. It has only been around for 3,000 years. We recognize that there are obviously Arab residents in Jerusalem, and they enjoy all the equal rights and all the equal benefits of the Jewish residents."

God says: “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.” … “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has born? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”  (Psalm 137:5-6; Isaiah 49:15-16).

The Jerusalem Connection says: While Huckabee recognized that "he is out of the mainstream in his beliefs,” he appears closer to what is becoming mainstream in Israel. By and large the US Congress is pro-Israel. The problem is it’s to inclined to Obama’s idea of what is pro-Israel: a two-state solution with a divided Jerusalem. Not only does Huckabee’s pro-Israel stance make sense, it’s much more in sync with God’s covenant promise for a national homeland for the Jewish people. Hopefully, more of our political leaders will begin to track with Mike Huckabee and Prime Minister Netanyahu rather than President Obama.

Action Alert regarding the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem!

The U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem should either reflect that it is located in Israel's capital and serve Israelis as well as Palestinians, or else it should relocate to a Palestinian City.

The U.S. government has refused to move its Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem even though Congress passed the "Jerusalem Embassy Act" in 1995, declaring that U.S. policy is that "Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel." The U.S. State Department should not pervert this policy with an office in Jerusalem that intentionally undermines the Jews' 3,000 year history, presence and rights to the city.

Please write and call the State Department, the White House, and your elected officials to express your opposition to this undermining of Jewish rights and history in Jerusalem.
