Israel's Peculiar Position
by Eric Hoffer

In 1968 the LA times ran this article, written by Eric Hoffer, a former longshoreman and non-Jewish American social philosopher. Born in 1902, Hoffer died in 1983, after writing nine books and winning the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Although written 34 years ago, the following is as timely and applicable today as then.

The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews. Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people, and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it. Turkey threw out a million Greeks and Algeria a million Frenchman. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees. Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab.

Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.

Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious, it must sue for peace. Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.  Continue Reading>>

One that calls for a Response
Each week we take a meaningful quote, tie it to scripture, and leave you with a take-home.

Israel’s former Ambassador to the U.S., Yoram Ettinger said: [Israel’s] options of deterrence and retaliation are not available in the face of the Iranian terror regime, which sacrificed hundreds of thousands of its people during the 1980-88 war against Iraq. The only option available is that of prevention and preemption. The Jewish state cannot rely on the US to prevent Iran's nuclearization, especially not on a US that opposes the military option and embraces the options of engagement and sanctions, which have played into the hands of Iran during the last seven years.

God says: “You descendants of Abraham my friend, you are my servant; I have chosen you and not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. … I am Yahweh, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Don’t be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel, for I myself will help you, declares Yahweh your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.” (Isaiah 41:8-10, 13-14).

The Jerusalem Connection says: The “Valley of Decision” is fast approaching for the Obama administration regarding what it will do with respect to Iran. Likely procrastination will reign as long as possible. For Israel, it’s a different matter. Their survival is at stake. In terms of action Israel may or may not take, they are dammed if they do and dammed if they don’t. If they act preemptively to take out Iran’s nuclear capability, world opinion will most certainly condemn them with the harshest possible denunciation. If they don’t act preemptively their very survival is at stake. If the US lingers in the “Valley of Indecision,” Israel will surely strike first. And it’s at this point that the God of Israel, Yahweh Almighty, “…will strengthen you and help you and uphold you with my righteous hand.” Halleluyah – guess Who has the last word?

Invitation to Participate in Jerusalem-USA

Jerusalem-USA (http://jerusalem-usa.blogspot.com) is a participatory art project that links the twenty Jerusalems in the United States with the original Jerusalem in Israel.   Residents of the American Jerusalems are invited to participate by sending photographs of everyday life (family and friends, interior and outside of homes, shops, community events and celebrations, signs with the name “Jerusalem,” local scenery, etc.). These photographs will be matched by images of everyday life in Jerusalem, Israel, and posted on the Jerusalem-USA blog.

Send photos as jpg images to melalexenberg@yahoo.com or mail them to Prof. Mel Alexenberg, Head of the School of the Arts, Emuna College, 104 Bethlehem Road, Jerusalem 91102 Israel.  In addition to being posted on the art project blog, the matched sets of images will be exhibited in museums and art galleries in Israel and USA, and incorporated in a book Jerusalem-USA.

A Certificate of Participation signed by the artist will be sent from Jerusalem, Israel, to each person who contributes a photograph.

The name of the American Jerusalems was inspired by the Bible where we read about King David establishing Jerusalem as the capital of the unified state of the Israelite nation 3,013 years ago.  Today, Jerusalem is the vibrant capital of the modern State of Israel.  The juxtaposition of photographs of the original Jerusalem with Jerusalems in USA creates an interactive network of people with shared values that deepens the friendship between them.
