Israel, the U.S. and the Goldstone Report
By John Bolton, The Wall Street Journal

The U.N.'s Human Rights Council (HRC) voted overwhelmingly on Friday to endorse the recommendations of the lopsidedly anti-Israel Goldstone Report. The report, named for former South African judge Richard Goldstone, who chaired the underlying investigation, concluded that Israel's 2008-2009 military campaign against the terrorist group Hamas was actually aimed against Gaza's residents as a whole. Thus it was an illegitimate exercise of "collective punishment," an extraordinarily amorphous legal concept.

The report alleges numerous specific human rights violations by both Israel and Hamas. But by attempting to criminalize Israel's strategy of crippling Hamas, the report in effect declared the entire antiterrorism campaign to be a war crime. Mr. Goldstone recommended that Israel and the Palestinians should each conduct their own investigations, failing which the Security Council should refer the entire matter to the International Criminal Court for possible prosecution.

In the month since the report's release, it has roiled the Middle East peace process. An Israeli spokesman said "it will make it impossible for us to take any risks for the sake of peace," perhaps foreshadowing Israeli withdrawal from negotiations while the report remains under active U.N. consideration.  Continue Reading>>

One that calls for a Response
Each week we take a meaningful quote, tie it to scripture, and leave you with a take-home.

U.S. Ambassador  to the United Nations, Susan Rice said: [Re: The Goldstone Report] "It is outrageous that a respected institution like the United Nations provides a platform to spread lies and stories about Israel." The Goldstone report accuses Israel Defense Forces and Palestinian militants of war crimes and possible crimes against humanity during their Dec. 27-Jan. 18 conflict in the Gaza Strip.

"The United Nations provides a stage for Ahmmadinejad, who threatens to annihilate Israel, and lets him stand judge …This is nothing short of ridiculous." Rice promised that the United States will continue to stand by Israel as a loyal friend in the fight against the Goldstone report.

God says: “Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says Yahweh. I will protect them from those who malign them.”… “Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge uprightly among men? No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth.”…“If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials become wicked.” (Psalm 12:5; 59:1-2; Proverbs 29:12).

The Jerusalem Connection says: While the trend lines of the Obama administration do not bode well for Israel, we can be grateful with respect to the scandalous findings of the Goldstone Report, we are standing with Israel. The tried and true axiom still stands, “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.” (Genesis 12:3). If our blessing Israel ever turns to cursing, our demise will soon follow.

Last Friday's emergency UN Human Rights Council debate on the Goldstone Report predictably saw a line-up of the world's worst abusers condemn democratic Israel for human rights violations. In a heated lynch mob atmosphere, Kuwait slammed Israel for “intentional killing, intentional destruction of civilian objects, intentional scorched-earth policy,” saying Israel “embodied the Agatha Christie novel, 'Escaped with Murder'.” Pakistan said the “horrors of Israeli occupation continue to haunt the international community’s conscience.” The Arab League said, “We must condemn Israel and force Israel to accept international legitimacy." Ahmadinejad’s Iran said “the atrocities committed against Palestinians during the aggressions on Gaza should be taken seriously” and followed up by the international community “to put an end to absolute impunity and defiance of the law.”

What the world's assembled representatives did not expect, however, was the speech that followed, organized by UN Watch.  The moment Col. Richard Kemp began his first sentence, the room simply fell silent.
