| One of the Best Each week we provide you with one of the week's most thought provoking articles. | Tough on Israel by The Washington Post One of the more striking results of the Obama administration's first six months is that only one country has worse relations with the United States than it did in January: Israel. The new administration has pushed a reset button with Russia and sent new ambassadors to Syria and Venezuela; it has offered olive branches to Cuba and Burma. But for nearly three months it has been locked in a public confrontation with Israel over Jewish housing construction in Jerusalem and the West Bank. To a less visible extent, the two governments also have differed over policy toward Iran.
This week a parade of senior U.S. officials has been visiting Jerusalem to tackle the issues: Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, Middle East envoy George J. Mitchell, national security adviser James L. Jones and senior aide Dennis Ross. But the tensions persist, and public opinion is following: The Pew Global Attitudes Project reported last week that Israel was the only country among 25 surveyed where the public's image of the United States was getting worse rather than better. Initially, the respondents were asked what happened on Tisha B'Av (Ninth of Av), and showed impressive knowledge. Ninety-seven percent responded that the Temple was destroyed, while only 2% said they did not know. The second question was whether respondents wanted to see the Temple rebuilt. Sixty-four percent responded favorably, while 36% said no. An analysis of the answers showed that not only the ultra-Orthodox and the religious look forward to the rebuilding of the Temple (100% and 97% respectively), but also the traditional public (91%) and many seculars - 47%. God says: “Don’t let anyone deceive in any way for the Day of the LORD will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He opposes and exalts himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped and even sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God. … So when you see standing in the holy place the abomination that causes desolation spoken of through the prophet Daniel let the reader understand then let those in Judea flee to the mountains.” (II Thessalonians 2:3-4; Matthew 24:15-16). The Jerusalem Connection says: Yesterday was Tisha B’Av, the 9th of Av, that memorializes many dark and dreadful days in Israel’s history. Two of the most prominent were the destruction of both the first and second Temple. Yet the Scriptures speak of a third Temple that will one day be rebuilt. Surprisingly, the vast majority of Israelis look forward with anticipation to the day when that occurs. Many Christians, especially Christian Zionists also see a third Temple in Israel’s prophetic future. The sad and sobering aspect of that future Temple will be it is defiled by one who claims to be God. The good news is the “Lawless One” is the one “whom the Lord Jesus, the Messiah, will overthrow with the breath of His mouth and destroy by the splendor of His coming.” (II Thess. 2:8). | Lesson on Tisha B'Av
