| One of the Best Each week we provide you with one of the week's most thought provoking articles. | Obama vs. McCain on the Middle East by Daniel Pipes
With the Democratic Party primaries over, American voters can focus on issues of political substance. For instance: How do the two leading candidates for U.S. president differ in their approach to Israel and related topics? Parallel interviews with journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, who spoke in early May with Democrat Barack Obama and in late May with Republican John McCain, offer some important insights.
Asked roughly the same set of questions, they went off in opposite directions. Obama used the interview to convince readers of his pro-Israel and pro-Jewish bona fides. He thrice reiterated his support for Israel: "the idea of a secure Jewish state is a fundamentally just idea, and a necessary idea"; "the need to preserve a Jewish state that is secure is … a just idea and one that should be supported here in the United States and around the world"; and "You will not see, under my presidency, any slackening in commitment to Israel's security." Obama then detailed his support within four specifically Jewish contexts. There are Judeo-Christian values. Judaism and Christianity are different religions. But they share common moral values and it is on the basis of these values that joint action can be taken and separate actions can be judged. ...These are terrible times for world Jewry. Islamic Jew-hatred is genocidal. The international Left has betrayed us. Our leaders are weak. Our friends are few and far between. If we wish to persevere in this environment we must embrace those who support us while eschewing those - even in our own ranks - who tell us that support for Israel is conditional. Now is not the time to quibble over Christian theology. Now is the time to stand united with our friends against our common enemies."
God says: "In the last days, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy,Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens And on the earth, Blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness And the moon to blood Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And everyone who calls On the name of the Lord will be saved; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be deliverance, As the Lord has said, Among the survivors Whom the Lord calls." (Joel 2:28-32) The Jerusalem Connection says: Contrary to Carolyn Glick's assertion, there is, in fact, a Judeo-Christian faith, that produces the Judeo-Christian values we both affirm. Judaism without Christianity is a motherless child. Christianity without Judaism is an orphan. When Messiah comes he will "restore everything" into the Israel of God (Acts 3:21). Until then, the Jews and Christians who join hands in common cause, do so on the basis of the clear and irrevocable covenants of God found in the Bible. Indeed, it is the Christian (Zionists) who will stand with Israel and the Jewish people during "these terrible times for world Jewry."
