| One of the Best Each week we provide you with one of the week's most thought provoking articles. | The Jewish State at 60 by William Kristol, NY Times
This week marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel. There have already been many birthday greetings, some heartfelt, some perfunctory, along with numerous reflections on the meaning of the occasion, some profound, some commonplace. For me, however, a discordant voice broke through.
Israel is a “stinking corpse” on its way to “annihilation,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said last Thursday as Israel celebrated Independence Day. “Those who think they can revive the stinking corpse of the usurping and fake Israeli regime by throwing a birthday party are seriously mistaken,” proclaimed the president of Iran, a nation that is a member in good standing of the United Nations and an active trading partner of countries like Germany and Russia. “Today the reason for the Zionist regime’s existence is questioned, and this regime is on its way to annihilation.”
I didn’t intend, in writing this column, to quote Ahmadinejad. I hate to dignify him by even taking note of his comments. I meant to pay tribute to the Zionists — men like Weizmann and Jabotinsky, Ben-Gurion and Begin — who made possible the almost miraculous redemption of the Jewish people in 1948. And I also intended to recognize the defenders of Israel at moments of crisis — men like Harry Truman and Richard Nixon and George W. Bush. Continue Reading>> | One that calls for a Response Each week we take a meaningful quote, tie it to scripture, and leave you with a take-home. | President Bush said in a speech to Israel’s Parliement: "[Today] we gather to mark a momentous occasion. Sixty years ago in Tel Aviv, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel's independence, founded on the 'natural right of the Jewish people to be masters of their own fate.' What followed was more than the establishment of a new country. It was the redemption of an ancient promise given to Abraham and Moses and David -- a homeland for the chosen people Eretz Yisrael. ... We condemn anti-Semitism in all forms — whether by those who openly question Israel's right to exist or by others who quietly excuse them. … We also believe that nations have a right to defend themselves and that no nation should ever be forced to negotiate with killers pledged to its destruction. …The founding charter of Hamas calls for the 'elimination' of Israel. The followers of Hezbollah chant 'Death to Israel, Death to America!' Osama bin Laden teaches that 'the killing of Jews and Americans is one of the biggest duties.' The president of Iran dreams of returning the Middle East to the Middle Ages and calls for Israel to be wiped off the map. … America stands with you in breaking up terrorist networks and denying the extremists sanctuary. America stands with you in firmly opposing Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions. Permitting the world's leading sponsor of terror to possess the world's deadliest weapons would be an unforgivable betrayal for future generations. For the sake of peace, the world must not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
God says: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” (Isaiah 43:1-3).
The Jerusalem Connection says: While President Bush affirms God’s “ancient promise given to Abraham … and that no nation should ever be forced to negotiate with killers pledged to its destruction,” he nevertheless continues to pressure Israel to give up God’s promised land to Palestinian Jihadists. Does he not see the flagrant contradiction he is trying to promote? The notion that the Palestinian Authority under President Mahmoud Abbas is of a different stripe than the other Jihadists is nonsense. The PA’s charter documents still refuse to recognize the right of existence to the state of Israel. In the last analysis it will be the God of Israel alone who will preserve Israel. In the meantime we must be the Watchmen on the wall who give ourselves no rest and give Him no rest till He establishes Jerusalem and makes her a praise in all the earth (Isaiah 62:6-7).

Bush, accompanied by his wife, arrived in Israel Wednesday. This time, the American leader is in the country to mark Israel's 60th anniversary and take part in the Presidential Conference organized and hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres. First on his itinerary were meetings with Peres and Olmert. The entire Cabinet, religious leaders and other dignitaries were on hand at Ben Gurion Airport to greet President Bush.
